4 Things You Didn’t Know About Sex Offenders

1. Fact: There is a sex offender living in almost every neighborhood. You can go to http://records.txdps.state.tx.us/ and click on “public Sex Offender Search,” and enter your county or your ZIP code to see.

2. When you get ready to sell your house, you are not required to disclose a nearby registered sex offender, but it would be prudent to somehow suggest that a buyer look up any in the neighbor…if not the neighbors will tell them after they buy and move in.

3. “Sex offender” means many things, even a 14 year old who emailed his friend a naked photo of his underage girlfriend as well as the 40 year old rapist.

4. Not all people convicted of sex crimes in Texas are on the list. Registration requirements vary depending on an offender’s crime, from 10 years to life. Someone who was convicted of a sex crime in 1998 may no longer be in the registry.

The Texas Sex Offender Registration Program provides a valuable public service, but it does have its limitations.
