Who Is Working For Us?
These are interesting observations and comments from one of my clients whom you can contact for more information on this Center:
In my position of President of the Legacy Center for Public Policy I had an occasion several years ago to scan the horizon of ideas that direct the future of our region and found that North Texas lawmakers and leaders are being influenced more by the money and minds in Austin and Houston than by North Texans and what we want for ourselves.
The Legacy Center for North Texas has determined it is time that North Texas forge its own future. We can no longer afford to accept what the other major metropolitan areas in Texas decide to leave on the table for North Texas. Under the complicated state constitution we need to be better prepared and work smarter to be more self-directed. That means we need to accurately understand the needs and desires of the North Texas community, have a solid plan for our region, and collaborate with our leaders to bring a fair share of the resources back to where they are generated.
Texas is considered a donor state by the United States Congress and Senate. Here is an example of that concept: according to the Honorable Mary Peters, former U.S. Secretary of Transportation under our 43rd President, George W. Bush during a recent address to the Dallas Friday Group, for every federal fuel tax dollar that Texans contribute to the Federal coffers, we get back 84 cents. For every federal fuel tax dollar that Alaska contributes, they back more than $6.00.
